Do QR Codes Expire or Have a Scan Limit? How It Really Works
Static QR codes never expire; dynamic ones depend on the provider. How free-tier scan caps and expiry dates work, QR Walrus limits by plan, and how to make sure a printed code keeps working.
Static QR codes have no scan limit and never expire: the data is in the pattern, so they work as long as the paper does. Dynamic QR codes depend on the service that redirects them, and that is where scan limits, expiry dates and "your trial has ended" surprises come from. This article explains how scan limits actually work, what QR Walrus's limits are, and how to make sure a printed code never stops working.
Do QR codes expire?
The code itself cannot expire. A QR code is just a pattern that encodes text. What can expire is the thing it points to: a web page taken down, a short link whose provider closed the account, or a trial that ended. For a static code, the only risk is the destination URL. For a dynamic code, the risk is the provider's policy.
Where scan limits come from
Every dynamic scan hits the provider's server before it reaches your content. Serving those redirects costs money, so free tiers cap them. Providers handle the cap in very different ways:
- Hard stop: the code shows an error page after N scans.
- Time limit: free codes stop working after 7, 14 or 30 days unless you pay.
- Deactivation on trial end: every code you made during the trial dies with it.
- Soft cap with top-ups: the code pauses at the cap and resumes when you add scans or upgrade.

QR Walrus scan limits by plan
| Plan | Dynamic codes | Scans per dynamic code | Static codes | Analytics history |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | 3 | 2,000 lifetime, extendable with a top-up | Unlimited | 30 days |
| Starter ($5/mo) | 20 | Unlimited | Unlimited | 1 year |
| Pro ($12/mo) | 200 | Unlimited | Unlimited | Unlimited |
| Business ($29/mo) | 750 | Unlimited | Unlimited | Unlimited |
Things that are deliberately not limited: dynamic codes never have a time-based expiry, codes created during the 7‑day Pro trial keep working on Free afterwards (within the Free limits), and static codes are unlimited on every plan. Current details are on the pricing page.
What happens when a Free code reaches 2,000 scans?
The code pauses: scanners see a short "this code is paused" page rather than a broken link, and you see the count in your dashboard well before it happens. You can either buy a one-time scan top-up (5,000 scans for $1 or 25,000 for $4, and they never expire) or move to Starter for unlimited scans. Nothing is deleted and the printed code is unchanged.
How many scans is 2,000, really?
For a business card or a lost-and-found tag, it is effectively unlimited. A café table code might see 20–50 scans a day, so a couple of months. A poster campaign in a busy station can burn through it in a week. If you expect more than a few hundred scans a month on a code, Starter's unlimited scans cost less than a single reprint.
Making sure a printed code never dies
- Use a provider whose free codes do not expire on a timer (ours do not).
- Keep the destination page alive; a dynamic code can be redirected if the page moves, a static one cannot.
- Check your dashboard occasionally for codes nearing a cap.
- For genuinely permanent, offline-safe needs (Wi‑Fi, a fixed document), use static.

Frequently asked questions
How many times can a QR code be scanned?
A static code: unlimited, forever. A QR Walrus dynamic code: unlimited on paid plans; 2,000 lifetime scans per code on the Free plan, extendable with a one-time top-up.
What happens when a Free QR code reaches its scan limit?
It pauses and scanners see a short "this QR code is paused" page. Add a scan top-up or upgrade and it resumes; nothing is deleted and the print does not change.
Do QR Walrus codes expire after the trial?
No. After the 7-day Pro trial the account moves to Free and codes keep working within the Free limits. There is no time-based expiry.
