Put your page on your own domain

Show your QR Walrus page at an address you own, like menu.yourcafe.in. It takes about ten minutes of work, and this guide covers every step, every popular provider and every common snag.

Before you start

  • A domain you own, and the login for the place where its DNS is managed. That is usually where you bought it.
  • A published page on QR Walrus.
  • A plan with custom domains (Pro: 1 domain · Business: 3 domains · Enterprise: as many as you need).

Choose the address

You can use a subdomain, the bare domain, or its www. version:

menu.yourcafe.inRecommended

A subdomain. Your website and email stay as they are. One CNAME record.

yourcafe.in

The bare domain. Only if it isn't used for a website. One A record; www.yourcafe.in forwards here if you add its record too.

www.yourcafe.in

One CNAME record; yourcafe.in forwards here if you add its record too.

Any name works for a subdomain: menu, order, links, book. Pick one that tells visitors what they'll find.

1. Add the domain in QR Walrus

  1. Open your pages and open the page in the editor.
  2. Go to Page design (on a phone: the Design tab) and scroll to Your own domain.
  3. Type the domain, like menu.yourcafe.in, and press Add.

The panel then lists the exact records for your domain, with copy buttons. Keep it open in one tab and your DNS provider in another.

2. Add the DNS records

Add these where your domain's DNS is managed. Copy the values from the panel: the TXT value is unique to you, and the names below use menu as the example.

  • A subdomain (menu.yourcafe.in)

    Type
    CNAME
    Name
    menu
    Value
    cname.vercel-dns.com
  • Or the bare domain (yourcafe.in)

    Type
    A
    Name
    @
    Value
    76.76.21.21
  • Proof the domain is yours

    Type
    TXT
    Name
    _qrwalrus.menu (bare domain: _qrwalrus)
    Value
    qrwalrus-verify=… (from the panel)
  • Optional: the www. or bare twin

    Type
    CNAME / A
    Name
    www, or @
    Value
    cname.vercel-dns.com / 76.76.21.21

Three rules that prevent most problems

  1. In the name field type only what's shown, like menu. Most providers add .yourcafe.in themselves; typing it too creates menu.yourcafe.in.yourcafe.in.
  2. Delete any other A, AAAA or CNAME record with the same name. Two records for one name send visitors to the wrong place.
  3. Leave MX records (email) alone. This setup never needs them changed.

“@” means the domain itself. Some providers want that name left blank instead, or the full domain typed. If a provider asks for a TTL, the default is fine.

Provider by provider

Menus move around now and then; if a label differs, look for “DNS”, “DNS management”, “Zone editor” or “Advanced DNS”.

GoDaddy
  1. Sign in, open My Products, choose your domain, then DNS (or Manage DNS).
  2. Click Add New Record, pick the type, fill in Name and Value, keep the default TTL and save. Repeat for each record.
  3. Bare domain: GoDaddy usually has an A record @ pointing to “Parked”. Edit that one to 76.76.21.21 instead of adding a second. For www, edit the existing CNAME www.
Hostinger
  1. In hPanel open Domains, choose your domain, then DNS / Nameservers.
  2. Under Manage DNS records choose the type, fill in Name and Points to (or the TXT value) and click Add Record.
  3. Hostinger adds default A, AAAA and CNAME records. Delete the ones with the same name as yours (often @ and www).
Namecheap
  1. Open Domain List, click Manage next to your domain, then Advanced DNS.
  2. Under Host Records click Add New Record, choose the type, fill in Host and Value, and click the tick to save.
  3. Remove Namecheap's default URL Redirect Record for @ and the CNAME www pointing to the parking page if you use those names.
  4. Host records only appear with Namecheap BasicDNS or PremiumDNS. If the domain uses other nameservers, add the records there.
Cloudflare
  1. Open your domain, then DNS → Records → Add record.
  2. Choose the type and fill in Name and Target (or Content).
  3. Set Proxy status to DNS only (grey cloud) for the CNAME or A record. A proxied (orange) record stops the check and the certificate.
BigRock
  1. Sign in, open your orders and click the domain.
  2. Open DNS Management → Manage DNS, then add each record on its tab (A, CNAME, TXT). For the bare domain leave the host name blank.
Spaceship
  1. Open Domain Manager and choose your domain, then its DNS records (Advanced DNS).
  2. Click Add record, choose the type, fill in Host and Value, and save.
Squarespace Domains (formerly Google Domains)
  1. Open Domains, choose your domain, then DNS → DNS Settings.
  2. Under Custom records click Add record, fill in Host, Type and Data, and save.
Any other provider, or a website builder
  1. Records go wherever the domain's nameservers point. If you moved the domain to Cloudflare, Wix, Shopify or a hosting company, add them there, not where you bought it.
  2. Look for DNS settings and add the records from the table above, one by one.

3. Wait for the checks

Back in QR Walrus, the panel shows three steps and marks each record as found:

  1. 1

    Points here

The CNAME or A record reaches us.

  2. 2

    Proved yours

Your TXT record is there, so nobody else can claim your domain.

  3. 3

    HTTPS ready

The secure certificate is issued, usually minutes after the first two.

The panel checks again every 30 seconds while it's open, and Check again asks right away. When all three are done the domain is Live: the page opens there, and its qrwalrus.page address and your QR codes forward to it.

If the records aren't added within 7 days, the domain is released from the page so it doesn't sit unused. You can add it again at any time.

If it doesn't work

“Points here” doesn't tick

  • Check the name saved at your provider: it should read menu.yourcafe.in, not menu.yourcafe.in.yourcafe.in.
  • Delete other A, AAAA or CNAME records with the same name, including old AAAA (IPv6) records on @.
  • On Cloudflare, switch the record to DNS only (grey cloud).
  • A bare domain needs the A record; most providers don't allow a CNAME on @.
  • Make sure you edited DNS where the nameservers point (see “Any other provider” above).
  • To see what the internet sees, look the name up on Google's Dig tool. If it shows the old value, the change hasn't spread yet; wait a little.

“Proved yours” doesn't tick

  • The TXT name is _qrwalrus.menu for menu.yourcafe.in, or just _qrwalrus for the bare domain.
  • Paste the value exactly as the panel shows it. Quotes added by your provider are fine.
  • Other TXT records on the domain (for email, Google and so on) can stay.

“HTTPS ready” takes longer than an hour

  • On Cloudflare, make sure the record isn't proxied.
  • If your domain has CAA records, add one that allows Let's Encrypt: 0 issue "letsencrypt.org".

“This domain is already used by another site”

  • It is connected to another website or hosting account (an old site builder, for example). Remove it there first, then add it again here.

It works on Wi-Fi but not on mobile data, or the old site still shows

  • Phones and networks remember DNS for a while. Wait an hour, or try another network or a private browser window.

After it's live

  • Keep the DNS records in place. We check them every day; if they are removed or point elsewhere, the page goes back to its qrwalrus.page address, and your QR codes keep working.
  • Keep the domain renewed at your provider (turn on auto-renew). An expired domain stops showing your page.
  • Editing and publishing the page works as before; changes show on your domain within a few minutes.

When your plan ends or changes

  • 5 days before a plan with domains ends (a trial, a cancelled subscription, or a payment that didn't go through), we email you.
  • If the plan no longer includes the domain, it is paused: the page shows on its qrwalrus.page address, and your QR codes keep working.
  • Renew or upgrade within 30 days and the domain comes back by itself, exactly as it was.
  • After 30 days it is released; you can add it again later.
  • Moving to a plan with fewer domains keeps your oldest ones working and pauses the rest.

Removing a domain

In the page's Your own domain panel, click Remove and confirm. The page goes back to its qrwalrus.page address straight away and your QR codes keep working. Then delete the records at your DNS provider, or point them somewhere else.

Safety

We only connect a domain after its DNS proves it belongs to you, so nobody can attach your domain to their page. Pages on custom domains follow the same rules as every page on QR Walrus: every page has a “Report this page” link whatever its branding, and a page our team takes down stops on its domain too.

Questions about custom domains

Do I have to buy the domain from QR Walrus?

No. Use a domain from any provider: GoDaddy, Hostinger, Namecheap, BigRock, Cloudflare, Spaceship or any other. You only add a few DNS records there.

Will my email or my current website stop working?

Not with a subdomain like menu.yourcafe.in: your website and email stay exactly as they are. You never change MX (email) records for this. Pointing the bare domain (yourcafe.in) at your page does replace the website that domain shows today.

Do I need to reprint my QR codes?

No. Your QR codes keep working and now open the page on your domain. The page's qrwalrus.page address keeps working too and forwards to your domain.

Is HTTPS included?

Yes. The secure certificate is set up and renewed for you, free, as soon as your records are in place. There is nothing to buy or upload.

How long does it take?

Adding the records takes a few minutes. Most providers publish them within minutes; some take a few hours, and rarely up to 48 hours. Your page stays on its qrwalrus.page address until the domain is ready.

Can I use www.yourcafe.in?

Yes. Add www.yourcafe.in or yourcafe.in, and we set up the other one to forward to it, so visitors who type either reach your page. That second record is optional.

Can one domain show several pages?

Each page gets its own domain, so use subdomains: menu.yourcafe.in for the menu page and book.yourcafe.in for bookings, for example. Each one counts as one domain on your plan.

What if I still can't get it working?

Contact us with the domain and a screenshot of the DNS records at your provider, and we'll tell you exactly what to change.
